Technical Note for Handling

  • Machinability: Invar is notoriously difficult to machine. It is "gummy" like stainless steel but work-hardens very quickly. If you are sourcing Invar rods, ensure the machine shop is experienced with nickel alloys.

  • Magnetic Properties: Unlike many other low-expansion materials, Invar is ferromagnetic at room temperature. If your application requires a non-magnetic environment (like an MRI), Invar may not be suitable.
